The Task in hand!

Work on the overhaul of Austerity No9 started in June 2019. The blog was started in June 2021 so photos and text will be added as the work progressed through that period. Because of the Covid pandemic work was interupted during that time but the intention is to restore Austerity No9 to working condition as an N.C.B locomotive in blue. Work continues.............

Smokebox assembly.

A long post this time - but a lot completed. We are still waiting for the remaining parts from Israel Newton & sons Ltd but lots of things are needing done before they arrive. The boiler barrel has been brought into the Shed on 1 road and Benny McInnes has been working on it. The smokebox front has had the 2 strengthening rings bolted on and that, and the wrapper. have been bolted together, and the holes countersunk for riveting. The doubling plates (smokebox side stiffeners) are now on (we found a plug from the Rotabroach drilling lodged between them - removed!). The saddle tank was inverted and filled with water and a small hole was discovered which has been patched. The rest still to be grit blasted - awaiting dry weather when we are on Shed! On Saturday 10th October the smokebox was trial fitted to No 9, and after some fettling is sitting nicely in place. The front bracket has been drilled to accommodate the bolts to the cylinder block casting. Steady and visible progress being made.

Both strengthening rings on smokebox plate. Door hinges on temporarily.

Firebox stored in wagon for the time being.

Holes drilled and bolted wrapper to front plate.

Rotabroach comes into its own on curve!

LH doubling plate (smokebox side stiffener) clamped and partially bolted.

RH side of smokebox - all ready for riveting.

Trial fitting - nicely done!

I'll not wait so long until the next posting! Again thanks to all who help in her restoration.
